Tuesday Night Music at the Black Elks Lodge

Emily Dalton · Ann Arbor Secrets · Oct 21, 2007

Not many have of heard the Black Elks lodge on Ann Arbor’s far west side and few have ventured there after dark on a Tuesday evening. Walking into the antiquated venue on Sunset Road is like descending a staircase into the late 70’s. From the mirrored ceilings to the burnt orange Formica counter tops, the Elks lodge looks thoroughly antique, the only exception being a modern 20-inch Sony TV hanging in the corner, playing The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly this night. Every Tuesday the Black Elks (an African American version of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) hosts free live music from 11:00 to 2:00 am, featuring local jazz musician Tom Stoepke and D.J. Charles Tillinghast spinning house, soul, and funk.

There is no cover, and a cash bar. You’ve worked hard for your midterms. Or maybe you haven’t. Either way, go check it out.
